21 Guns Bid me Goodbye – Gary Hays

21 Guns Bid me Goodbye - Gary Hays

My full-length novel, “21 Guns Bid me Goodbye” is based on the PTSD suicide of my Army veteran son. The story as I have written it merely touches on the actual event, but more so focuses on the life of the father, followed by the observation of his son upon his return home from his 4th warzone deployment and subsequent forced medical retirement. Be aware, many facts and characters have been changed. Many events have been elaborated and embellished, some way more than others. Also please know, it was written with great emotional difficulty.

Bittersweet. A story of a father and an old hippy (I suspect still a hippy) and the product of the 60’s, now in his 60’s who had a father in the military. He brings you from your youth to current day and the tragedy of having a son with PTSD. The book, however, is very entertaining about his very interesting talented life basically “on the road” for his entire life. He is a great writer who I hope will apply his many talents with the written word to entertaining us in the future. I would love to see him write fiction – how he could spin his words into a beautiful creation would be fun! I couldn’t stop reading this book into the wee hours of the night. The last chapter brings you crashing into the reality of our world today. His son was a hero who fought against terrorism. He should be remembered in that way.
